Tanner had managed to secure a quiet seat at the front of the school under the drab grey skies. He’d been looking forward a little alone time with Alison all morning.

“How were classes?” he asked, putting his arm around her shoulders as she sat.

“Not bad. I was thinking about Halloween though. We could talk to your parents, and you could say goodbye.”

Tanner tensed and took his arm from around Alison’s shoulders. He had no interest in doing such a ridiculous thing.

“No. I want to look forward, not back. We have a bright future ahead of us. I don’t want to ruin that by digging up the past.” He refused to look at her.

Alison reached out and put her hand on his cheek. She had expected him to be excited by the proposal.

“But surely you want to speak to them one last time? You must have unanswered questions?”

“I already said no.”

“That’s what Halloween is all about though. We have a chance to speak to the other side.”

“Stop pushing this, Alison. I already said no. I don’t know why you’re so attached to this idea, but I said no.”

“Why are you so against the idea?”

Alison stood, unsure what to do with herself. She had felt it was a good idea, something to help Tanner heal, and he wasn’t even looking at her.

“I told you. I don’t want to become lost in the past. Let me deal with my past my way. This is coming out of left field. I’ve never said I needed this. Just back off and drop it.”

He also stood and shoved his hands into his pockets, looking out over the grounds toward the ragged pink edges of the horizon. Maybe he could go for a run to clear his head and get away from Alison’s pushing. He didn’t understand why she couldn’t just drop the topic.

“Tanner, you’re being ridiculous.”

He turned to look at her. His eyes were stormy, and his soul flickered with anger. Alison had never seen him like that before.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he snapped then walked around her and went into the school.

They’d been planning on having some precious alone time later that evening. Alison sighed and let him be. He would come around once he’d calmed down. It was just the initial emotions clouding his judgement.
